Act 4 scene 3
BRUTUS

You have done that you should be sorry for.
There is no terror, Cassius, in your threats,
For I am arm'd so strong in honesty
That they pass by me as the idle wind,
Which I respect not. I did send to you
For certain sums of gold, which you denied me:
For I can raise no money by vile means:
By heaven, I had rather coin my heart,
And drop my blood for drachmas, than to wring
From the hard hands of peasants their vile trash
By any indirection: I did send
To you for gold to pay my legions,
Which you denied me: was that done like Cassius?

My Version:
You have done some things that you should be ashamed of;
I am not afraid of your threats Cassius
My honesty is so strong
that you pass me by like I am nothing at all
I do not respect that
I sent you to collect a sum of gold, which you denied to do
Then I cannot raise any vile money
I would rather coin my heart, by heaven
I shed my blood for drachmas, than to wring
from the hands of the peasants,
By any means, I did send you for gold to pay my legions
You then denied me: Was that how Cassius wanted it done?

I feel that the importance of these lines are to show what it right for him to do. He is denying everything that Brutus asks him to do. At the end Brutus asks, "Was that done like Cassius?" This relates to betrayal because Brutus is asking for gold, and he is not getting it. I feel that this relates to betrayal because when you betray someone you do the opposite of what the person wants.

Betrayal Song 2

You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi
http://www.lyrics007.com/Bon%20Jovi%20Lyrics/You%20Give%20Love%20A%20Bad%20Name%20Lyrics.html

This song relates to the topic of betrayal. It starts off by saying that the singer has been "shot through the heart." This is a result of being betrayed. He goes on to say that the traitor shows an "angel's smile" and promises him "heaven" but puts him "through hell." This shows that the traitor seems friendly and loving, but in reality she is not nice. This reflects the relationship between Caesar and Brutus. Brutus was Caesar's best friend, however he betrayed and killed him.

In the chorus, the singer sings, "I play my part and you play your game." He is saying that he does what he needs to do to have a good relationship, however the traitor plays games with him. The next four lines are very important to the topic.
"You paint your smile on your lips.
Blood red nails on your fingertips.
A schoolboy's dream, you act so shy.
Your very first kiss was your first kiss goodbye."
The singer is saying that the traitor's smile is fake, much like Brutus's friendship and that although she has a smile, she has blood on her fingers. This is similar to Brutus, because although he was nice to Caesar, he ended up having Caesar's blood on his hands.

modern speech

Remember march 15?
Didn't we cap Caesar for justice?
What evil man stabbed him?
And didn't do it for justice?
Will one of us, who killed the most imprtant man in the world
Support dishonest public officials by taking bribes?
And sell our honor
For so much trash
I would rather be a dog and howl at the moon
Than be such a person.

This was a very important point that Brutus made. this was important because Cassius was mad at Brutus and wasn't really believing what brutus was telling him. after this point, though, Cassius started to listen and comprehend what Brutus was explaining to him.

Betrayal Similes and Metaphors

Betrayal is like the end of the world: you just can't see it happening.
Betrayal is a sharp knife, cutting deep, to the bone.

Brutus is as trustworthy as a magazine, meaning not at all.

Betrayal Song

The First Cut is the Deepest - Cat Stevens
I would have given you all of my heart
but there's someone who's torn it apart
and she's taking almost all that I've got
but if you want, I'll try to love again
baby I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

'cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

I still want you by my side
just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
cause I'm sure gonna give you a try
and if you want, I'll try to love again
but baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

This song relates to the topic of betrayal because the author has been betrayed and is not able to trust anyone. In the song, the person who has betrayed the songwriter is a lover. In "Julius Caesar," Caesar is betrayed by some senators and good friends. The most important conspirator is his best friend, Brutus. The chorus and title of the song says "the first cut is the deepest." This means that betrayal is always harder to deal with when it is the first time it has happened to you and you have not experienced it. This is true in the case of Julius Caesar. Up until the conspiracy, he had been loved by everyone. The people saw him as a hero and the senate was prepared to make him the king. Thus, he did not think that he could be betrayed by members of that same senate and his best friend. The song also states that it is possible to love even after something like this happens: "I'll try to love again." Although it is not obvious in the play, Caesar probably has some suspicions about Brutus, because he has seen him with Cassius, who he mistrusts. However, he still trusts Brutus and is unknowing about the brewing conspiracy which is centered around Brutus.
